Know about the Recipe :
Sankranthi is the biggest festival celebrated in Telugu States and in Tamilnadu. The auspicious time when Sun God enters Makara raashi is celebrated as Makara Sankranthi. This festival is called as THAI PONGAL in Tamilnadu and it is also celebrated as Tamil New Year. Authentic, traditional dish called "Pongal" is cooked on this harvest festival which is offered to God as 'thanksgiving'. Pongal is cooked in an earthen pot with the first crop of rice along with jaggery and ghee. Pongal (with salt) is also very famous breakfast dish in Tamilnadu and also in Andhra.

Today as Sankranthi / Thai Pongal special, I am sharing the recipe of making PONGAL (salt) in Tamilnadu style. Lets enter into the kitchen to know the recipe. Start cooking by dry roasting moongdal till they turn into golden colour. Add rice (New Rice is preferred) and soak in water for 15 min. Use more water than regular quantity to cook this soaked rice and dal by adding salt and black pepper. Cook till the rice gets soft and keep it aside. Now in a pan, add oil and saute mustard seeds, jeera, urad dal and chana dal. Add chopped ginger, few cashew nuts, dried red chillies, curry leaves, coriander leaves and fry well. Finally add cooked rice and mix well.  Cook for 2-3 minutes and dish out. You can add little ghee on top when you serve. Authentic, traditional, mouth melting, tasty Pongal is ready to serve now. Tastes superb when served hot. Coconut chutney is the best combination to Pongal as breakfast. This dish is healthy too because of black pepper.
