Three days of Sankranthi festival brings lot of joy and happiness to all of us. This is best opportunity to spend happy time with all childhood friends, relatives in our village. And more over its time to taste all traditional delicacies that will take you back to your olden and golden memories of sweet childhood. Today I am going to share a simple yet super yummy Rayalaseema special sweet dish "SENAGA PAPPU PAYASAM" made with broken wheat (Rawa), Dry Bengal gram (chana dal) and jaggery.
"Senaga Pappu Payasam" is also very famous Karnataka and is specially cooked for Sankranthi Festival. It is well known as "Huggi" and "Hayagreeva Payasam" in Karnataka. Our Rayalaseema cuisine (especially Kurnool & Anantapur districts) is highly influenced with Karnataka flavours. Lot of similarities in our culture, festivals, traditions and cuisines.
Today let me share this simple, easy, Rayalaseema & Karnataka traditional sweet dish "Senaga Pappu Payasam / Huggi" with you all. Before start cooking this payasam I have pressure cooked Chana dal and kept it ready to use in payasam. Roasted few cashew nuts in ghee and kept aside. Now actual cooking starts by boiling water. To bring a great aroma to the dish I have added Ilaichi powder to the boiling water. Truly, there is no sweet in India that is prepared without using ilaichi powder. When the water got boiled, I have added wheat rawa, mixed well and added boiled chana dal. Cooked for 10 minutes. Later added jaggery and mixed well till gets melt. Finally added a cup of milk and cooked till all the ingredients blend nicely. Dished out garnished with roasted cashew nuts. Now "Senaga Pappu Payasam" is ready to taste.
Please follow all the step-by-step photos, watch recipe making video and try to prepare this simple, easy, flavoured, traditional "Senaga Pappu Payasam" for this Sankranthi for your family. Its a yummy and delicious feast to all your loved ones. Enjoy...!
