GONGURA RICE (Rice with Sorrel Leaves)

Know about the Recipe :
Gongura (Sorrel Leaves) is very famous in Andhra Pradesh and has a very important place in Andhra families' daily food routine. These tangy and delicious leaves are used to prepare many of Andhra signature delicacies like Gongura Pachadi (Pickle), Gongura Mutton and many other veg and non-veg dishes. Gongura brings a superb flavour and taste when added to any recipe. There are 2 types of Sorrel leaves available in which red sorrel leaves are more sour when compared to the green sorrel leaves.

Using this amazing Gongura, today I am preparing a spiced & flavoured rice called "GONGURA RICE". It is very simple and easy dish, ideal lunch box recipe. You might have tried & tasted various rice dishes for your meal like Pulihora and lemon rice. But why the same old dishes every time, add flavour to your meal with this tastiest Gongura Rice.

I have prepared a delicious masala by dry roasting chana dal, urad dal, jeera, mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. Later fried all other ingredients in oil and added gongura and closed the lid to cook it. Gongura gets soft and cook very quickly in just 2 minutes . Then red chilly powder, turmeric powder and salt. Mixed well adding cooked rice. Finally added masala powder and cooked for 3 more minutes until all the masala blends well with rice. Finally sprinkled few coriander leaves and Gongura Rice got ready to serve.

INGREDIENTS : 
For Masala Powder : 
2 tsp Chana Dal
1 tsp Urad Dal
1/2 tsp Jeera
1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
1/4 tsp Fenugreek seeds

For Rice : 
1 ladle Oil
1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
1/2 tsp Jeera
1/2 tsp Chana Dal
1/4 tsp Urad Dal
3/4 cup Onion
Curry Leaves
3/4 tsp Ginger Garlic Paste
1 big cup Gongura / Sorrel leaves 
1/2 tsp Red chilly powder
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
3/4 tsp Salt
1 big cup Cooked Rice
Few Coriander leaves

METHOD : 
1) In a pan dry roast chana dal, urad dal, jeera, mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds.
2) Add to mixie and make coarse Masala powder.
3) In other pan, add oil.
4) Add mustard seeds, jeera, chana dal, urad dal and fry well.
5) Add finely chopped onion, curry leaves and mix well.
6) When onions turn golden colour, add ginger garlic paste.
7) Later add Gongura, mix well and close the lid for 2 min. to cook.
8) Add red chilly powder, turmeric powder and salt.
9) Later add cooked rice and mix well.
10) Finally add above ground Masala powder and mix well to blend well with rice.
11) Sprinkle coriander leaves and dish out.
12) Enjoy the taste of "GONGURA RICE".

Tips : 
1) You can use left over rice also to prepare this rice recipe.
2) Cook Gongura only for 2 min. because it gets soft very quickly.
